Plumbing Careers Are an Excellent Choice

Our apprentices have proven time and time again to be some of our greatest assets. People who are willing to work hard, learn the plumbing industry, and build real-world skills deserve an opportunity to get their start in the skilled trades.

There is a strong demand for skilled plumbers in Ohio, and that demand creates excellent career opportunities for people entering the plumbing trade. Wages continue to grow, and plumbing offers the opportunity to build a rewarding career with skills that can remain valuable for decades.

Plumbing and Artificial Intelligence

Plumbing offers something that is becoming increasingly valuable in a changing job market: long-term career stability. Artificial intelligence is already changing the value of certain skills. Jobs that once required years of education and experience to perform tasks like analyzing information, preparing reports, creating content, or processing data can increasingly use AI to accomplish those tasks faster and with fewer people. Over time, that has the potential to change how much employers are willing to pay for some of those skills.

The skilled trades are different. AI can provide information, calculations, and other tools to a plumber, but it doesn't eliminate the need for someone to physically diagnose, install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems. The core value of the trade remains tied to skilled hands-on work, problem-solving, and experience in the field. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment for plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters to grow 4% between 2024 and 2034, with approximately 44,000 openings every year. That's about 22,700 additional jobs over the decade, before accounting for workers who retire or leave the occupation (2026).

Unlike many careers, plumbing is a hands-on trade that can't easily be replaced by artificial intelligence. There will always be a need for skilled plumbers.

Hands-On Learning from Experienced Plumbers and Technicians

Why Starting As A Plumbing Apprentice Has Its Advantages

While experienced plumbers are in high demand, we've discovered that there are some real advantages to hiring people who are just entering the plumbing trade with little to no experience.

Apprentices have the opportunity to learn our standards for quality and customer service from the beginning. They're not battling years of habits that may need to be changed once they join our team. Instead, we can help them develop the skills, work ethic, and attention to detail that we expect from our team.

Younger people entering the skilled trades can also bring a willingness to learn new technology and adapt to the way the industry is changing. Plumbing has changed significantly over the years, and staying current with new technology, products, and codes is an important part of being a successful plumber.

For someone looking to start a career in plumbing, a willingness to learn, strong work ethic, and good attitude can make you incredibly valuable to any plumbing company.

When a plumbing problem strikes, it can quickly turn from a minor inconvenience into a major headache. Whether it’s a burst pipe flooding your basement or a clogged drain backing up your kitchen sink, knowing how to handle these situations is crucial. I want to share what I’ve learned about emergency plumbing and how 24/7 plumbing solutions can make a real difference when you need help the most.

Why 24/7 Plumbing Solutions Matter

Plumbing issues don’t follow a schedule. They can happen at any time - in the middle of the night, on weekends, or during holidays. That’s why having access to 24/7 plumbing solutions is so important. When you have a trusted service available around the clock, you can avoid costly damage and stress.

For example, imagine waking up to a leaking water heater flooding your laundry room at 2 AM. Without immediate help, water damage can ruin floors, walls, and personal belongings. A plumber who offers 24/7 service can arrive quickly, stop the leak, and start repairs right away.

Many plumbing companies in Ohio understand this need and provide emergency response teams ready to assist you anytime. This kind of availability is not just convenient - it’s essential for protecting your home or business.

What is considered a plumbing emergency?

Not every plumbing problem requires an urgent call, but some situations demand immediate attention. Here are some common examples of what qualifies as a plumbing emergency:

  • Burst pipes: A broken pipe can release gallons of water quickly, causing flooding and structural damage. It can also raise your water bill if left too long.

  • No water supply: Access to water is a serious safety issue. If your water suddenly stops flowing, it's an urgent health and safety issue.

  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage in your home is a health hazard and needs fast professional cleanup.

  • Gas leaks: Though not strictly plumbing, gas leaks often involve plumbing systems and require urgent action. (Greene's team takes care of all forms of residential gas lines and leaks.)

  • Water heater failure: A leaking or malfunctioning water heater can cause flooding or lack of hot water. For some, this is a greater health and safety concern, making it an emergency situation.

  • Clogged drains causing overflow: Toilets or sinks that overflow can damage floors and walls.

If you experience any of these, it’s best to call for professional help immediately. Quick response can minimize damage and reduce repair costs.

How to Prepare for Plumbing Emergencies

While you can’t always prevent plumbing emergencies, you can prepare for them. Here are some practical steps to take:

  1. Know where your main water shut-off valve is located. In an emergency, turning off the water quickly can prevent flooding. We recommend having a separate one for each kitchen, laundry room, and bathroom to keep water flowing to the rest of your house in the event of a leak.

  2. Keep contact information for a reliable plumber handy. Save the number of a company that offers 24/7 service, like Greene's: emergency plumbing services.

  3. Inspect your plumbing regularly. Look for signs of leaks, corrosion, or slow drains and address them early.

  4. Install water leak detectors. These devices alert you to leaks before they cause major damage.

  5. Understand basic plumbing fixes. Knowing how to stop a leak or unclog a drain temporarily can help until a professional arrives.

Taking these steps can give you peace of mind and reduce the impact of unexpected plumbing problems.

What to Expect from Professional Emergency Plumbing Services

When you call a professional plumber for an emergency, you want to know what to expect. Here’s how a reputable service typically handles the situation:

  • Rapid response: They will prioritize your call and dispatch a technician quickly.

  • Assessment and diagnosis: The plumber will inspect the problem to understand the cause and extent of damage.

  • Immediate action: They will take steps to stop leaks, clear blockages, or secure the system to prevent further damage.

  • Clear communication: You should receive a straightforward explanation of the problem, the repair options, and the costs involved.

  • Quality repairs: The plumber will use the right tools and parts to fix the issue properly.

  • Follow-up advice: After the repair, they may offer tips to avoid future emergencies or recommend maintenance services.

Choosing a company with a strong reputation and experience in emergency plumbing ensures you get reliable help when it matters most.

Why Choose Local Plumbing Experts in Ohio

Local plumbers understand the unique plumbing challenges faced by homes and businesses in Ohio. From the cold winters that can cause pipes to freeze and burst, to the older infrastructure in some communities, local expertise is invaluable.

By choosing a local company like Greene's Plumbing, Heating & Electrical, you benefit from:

  • Faster response times due to proximity.

  • Knowledge of local building codes and regulations.

  • Personalized service that builds long-term relationships.

  • Support for local businesses and economy.

This local connection means you’re not just a number - you’re a valued customer who can count on trusted professionals.

Taking Action When Plumbing Emergencies Strike

If you find yourself facing a plumbing emergency, here’s a simple plan to follow:

  1. Stay calm. Panicking won’t help and can make the situation worse.

  2. Turn off the main water supply to stop flooding.

  3. Shut off electricity in affected areas if water is near outlets or appliances.

  4. Call a trusted plumber immediately. Use a service that offers 24/7 availability.

  5. Document the damage for insurance purposes if safe to do so by taking pictures.

  6. Follow the plumber’s instructions and avoid DIY fixes that could cause more harm.

Remember, quick and calm action can save you time, money, and stress.

Understanding how emergency plumbing services work and having access to 24/7 plumbing solutions can make all the difference when unexpected problems arise. By preparing ahead and knowing who to call, you protect your property and maintain peace of mind. If you ever need help, don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals who are ready to assist you anytime.

As the winter chill sets in, homeowners must protect their homes from damage that can be caused by freezing temperatures. One of the most common issues during winter is frozen pipes, which can lead to costly repairs and water damage. In this blog post, we'll explore practical tips to help you prevent frozen pipes and ensure a cozy, stress-free winter in your residential setting.

Setting your thermostat to 55°F or higher is a great way to prevent frozen pipes.

1. Heat Tape and Insulation

Begin by identifying the pipes most susceptible to freezing, typically those in unheated or poorly insulated areas such as basements, attics, and crawl spaces. Use foam insulation sleeves or heat tape to wrap these pipes and provide an extra layer of protection against the cold.

Here is our comprehensive guide to the pros and cons of using heat tape to determine if this is a good option for you: Unraveling the Pros and Cons of Heat Tape.

Here's a video about selecting and installing heat tape in your home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBkUs57Ub94

2. Seal Leaks and Cracks

Cold air can easily find its way into your home through tiny openings. Inspect your home for any gaps, cracks, or leaks in windows, doors, and walls. Seal these openings with weather stripping or caulk to prevent the intrusion of cold air and keep the temperature inside more stable.

3. Keep a Consistent Temperature

Maintain a consistent temperature in your home, especially during extremely cold nights. Set your thermostat to at least 55° Fahrenheit, even if you're away, to ensure that your pipes stay warm enough to resist freezing. Most households keep thermostats set somewhere between 68°F and 72°F.

4. Open Cabinet Doors

Allow warm air to access pipes located in cabinets by keeping the cabinet doors open. This is particularly important for pipes under sinks along exterior walls, as the increased airflow can help prevent them from freezing.

5. Drip Faucets

On extremely cold nights, allowing faucets to drip slightly can relieve pressure in the pipes and reduce the risk of freezing. Moving water is less likely to freeze than stagnant water, making this a simple yet effective preventative measure.

6. Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses

Before winter arrives, disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses. If possible, shut off the water supply to outdoor faucets and leave them open to allow any remaining water to drain out, preventing freezing and potential damage.

7. Use Space Heaters

For areas of your home more prone to freezing, like a basement or crawl space, use space heaters to protect your pipes from freezing. We recommend leaving these on when the temperatures are expected to be extreme, like during winter storms or harsh nights. This will keep the space warm and prevent frozen pipes.

8. Be Prepared for Vacations

If you plan to be away during the winter, take extra precautions. Keep your thermostat set to a minimum temperature of 50°F, ask a neighbor to check on your home periodically, and consider shutting off the water supply to the house.

In Conclusion:

By taking these proactive steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of frozen pipes and the headaches that come with them. Winter-proofing your home is an investment in the longevity and functionality of your plumbing system, ensuring a warm and worry-free winter for you and your family. Stay cozy, stay prepared!
