As the days become warmer, there's a certain joy in the air! Springtime is wonderful for so many reasons, but some of us take the first sign of spring as a reminder to stock up on allergy meds.

As HVAC technicians, it's our job to understand air quality and how it affects the human body. If someone complains of constant congestion or frequent headaches, the symptoms could be caused by toxins or allergens in the air. These symptoms are usually a result of environmental factors, connecting air quality in the home to the health and well-being of those living there. Carbon Monoxide causes sickness and death, dust and pollen cause allergies and respiratory issues, and mold spores cause odors and general health issues (links are to sources for the facts).

Every year, we receive a multitude of questions about improving air quality. The industry is full of solutions- some excellent, some borderline scams, and most sporting big price tags. We're going to go through our list of tried and proven air quality solutions.

Air Filters: Your First Line of Defense

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Filters should be changed regularly throughout the year as part of your usual home maintenance routine.

Not sure how often to change them? We've got another quick article about that here (HVAC Filters).

Your filter's main purpose is to protect your unit from building up with dust, hair, dander, and debris. By filtering out pollutants, but still allowing air to pass through, the filter keeps your HVAC equipment in optimal condition. Expensive anti-allergy filters are usually made with a thicker material because they're designed to let as little debris through as possible. They work great for collecting the gunk out of the air- so much so that they end up restricting airflow and putting stress on your unit. As a result, they need to be replaced more often because they get dirty much faster than a standard filter.

In our professional opinion, allergy-free filters are not worth it.

There are better solutions that will save you money in the long run and give the same, or better, results.

Mid-grade, light paper filters are your best bet for allergy season without breaking the bank or your unit. Change them more often during the worst parts of the season. You might also consider a reusable filter or an electric filter. Our customers have had great experiences with these options, and they're much better for your health and wallet.

Air Purifiers: The Best Air Purification Solution

Air purification is HUGE when combatting allergy season! Here are two of our favorite options and some associated prices from our experience:

AirScrubber by Aerus | $800 - $1000

Air Purification Technology for Healthier Living
AirScrubber by Aerus

By far, our favorite air purifier is the AirScrubber by Aerus. Their technology is cutting-edge, providing you with clean, oxygen-rich, allergen-free air. It eliminates odors, air-borne viruses, and mold to allow for a healthier home environment for you and your family as well.

Installation typically takes technicians an hour and requires a transformer to work properly. We estimate total costs to be between $800 and $1000 depending on area and company.

HALO by REME | $600 - $900

Air Purifier for Healthier Living
HALO by REME

The next favored solution is the Halo by REME. These units will cleanse the air of any viruses, odors, allergens, and mold with the use of hydrogen peroxide. The results are not as exceptional as the AirScrubber, but it does a thorough job of purifying the air you breathe. For maintenance, the hydrogen peroxide cartridges need to be replaced every 2 or 3 years.

Installation typically takes technicians an hour, and some additional materials may be required when fitting the unit. We estimate total costs to be around $600 to $900 depending on area and company.

In the world of plumbing, staying ahead of the curve is essential for providing efficient and effective services. One technological advancement that has revolutionized the way plumbing issues are diagnosed and resolved is the use of drain cameras and locators. Greene's Plumbing, Heating & Electrical is at the forefront of embracing these innovative tools, and in this blog post, we'll delve into the fascinating world of drain cameras and locators, exploring their benefits and how they contribute to a seamless plumbing experience.

Drain cameras are snaked down into drains to see where the blockage or damage is and prevents the infamous "guessing game" when trying to repair plumbing under concrete or underground.
Running the Drain Camera

Understanding Drain Cameras

Drain cameras, also known as sewer cameras or inspection cameras, are compact, waterproof devices equipped with high-resolution cameras and LED lights. These cameras are designed to navigate through pipes and drains, providing real-time visual inspection of the interior. At Greene's Plumbing, we recognize the invaluable role drain cameras play in identifying blockages, leaks, and other issues within the plumbing system.

Benefits of Drain Cameras

1. Accurate Diagnosis

Drain cameras offer a precise view of the inside of pipes, enabling our technicians to identify the root cause of plumbing issues with accuracy. This eliminates the need for invasive exploratory measures, saving both time and resources.

2. Preventive Maintenance

Regular inspections using drain cameras allow us to catch potential problems before they escalate. By proactively addressing issues such as small leaks or blockages, we can prevent major plumbing disasters and extend the lifespan of the entire system.

3. Cost-Efficiency

Drain cameras streamline the diagnostic process, reducing the time it takes to identify and locate issues. This efficiency translates into cost savings for our clients, as we can provide quicker and more targeted solutions.

Understanding Locators

In conjunction with drain cameras, locators are indispensable tools that help pinpoint the exact location of issues within the plumbing system. These devices work in tandem with transmitters attached to the drain camera, allowing our technicians to trace the path of the camera and identify the depth and location of the problem.

Benefits of Locators

1. Precision in Repairs

Locators enable us to precisely locate the source of a plumbing issue, making repairs more targeted and efficient. This precision minimizes disruption to the surrounding area and reduces the need for extensive excavation.

2. Minimized Damage

By accurately locating the issue, our technicians can often address problems without extensive digging or disruption to property. This is especially crucial in residential areas where minimizing damage is a top priority.

Conclusion

At Greene's Plumbing, Heating & Electrical, we embrace innovation to provide our clients with the best possible plumbing solutions. The integration of drain cameras and locators into our service offerings exemplifies our commitment to efficiency, accuracy, and customer satisfaction. By investing in these advanced technologies, we ensure that our plumbing services are not only effective but also at the forefront of industry standards. Trust Greene's Plumbing to navigate the depths of your plumbing system with precision and expertise.

Heat tape can come in many different forms, though the reusable cords are usually the best option if you plan to use it for the next several years.
Heat Tape

With winter upon us, the risk of frozen pipes becomes a significant concern. Homeowners seek effective solutions to protect their plumbing systems, and one popular option is heat tape. In this blog post, we'll dissect the pros and cons of using heat tape, providing professional insights for homeowners.

For a more comprehensive list of ways to prevent frozen pipes, read our Guide to Preventing Frozen Pipes.

Pros of Heat Tape:

1. Prevents Frozen Pipes:

Heat tape is a reliable solution for preventing frozen pipes, especially in vulnerable areas like attics, basements, and crawl spaces. It provides a consistent heat source that keeps pipes above freezing temperatures, reducing the risk of costly damage.

2. User-Friendly Installation:

Heat tape is generally easy to install, making it accessible for homeowners who prefer a DIY approach. With proper guidance, individuals can add an extra layer of protection to their plumbing system without professional assistance.

3. Cost-Effective Solution:

Compared to other methods of preventing frozen pipes, heat tape is a cost-effective solution. It's an upfront investment that can potentially save homeowners from expensive repairs associated with burst pipes. Once purchased, they can last a long time and reusable chords can be reinstalled every year.

4. Versatility:

Make sure you look into the different capabilities each option and brand has to offer. Heat tape comes in various forms, including self-regulating and constant wattage, offering homeowners options that can be tailored to their specific needs. This versatility makes it suitable for a range of pipe configurations and environments.

Cons of Heat Tape:

1. Electricity Consumption:

Heat tape requires electricity to function, leading to additional energy consumption. Homeowners should be mindful of the impact on their utility bills, especially during extended periods of extremely cold weather. Pay attention to the reviews of each option and make sure the heat tape's energy efficiency doesn't ruin your holiday budget.

2. Monitoring and Maintenance:

Heat tape systems require regular monitoring to ensure they are functioning correctly. Homeowners need to be proactive in checking for any malfunctions or damage to maintain the effectiveness of the system.

3. Installation Challenges:

While basic installations are user-friendly, more complex plumbing systems may require professional installation to ensure proper coverage and functionality. This adds to the overall cost for homeowners who may not be comfortable with intricate installations. Make sure you read the instructions carefully and be honest with yourself about your abilities. Sometimes it can help to have a professional install the heat tape for the first year you have it.

4. Potential Fire Hazard:

If damaged or installed incorrectly, heat tape can pose a fire hazard. Homeowners must follow manufacturer guidelines and when in doubt, seek professional assistance to reduce the risk of accidents.

Is Heat Tape The Solution For You?

In weighing the pros and cons of heat tape, homeowners must consider their specific needs, budget constraints, and level of comfort with DIY installations. While heat tape can be an effective solution for preventing frozen pipes, it's essential to be aware of its limitations and potential risks. For a comprehensive evaluation and safe installation, consulting with a professional plumbing service is always recommended.

By understanding the advantages and drawbacks of heat tape, homeowners can make informed decisions to protect their plumbing systems and ensure a worry-free winter season.
